Pit Bull Background:
The American Pit Bull Terrier has its origins in England. It is the product of breeding between English Bulldogs and Old English Terriers. These dogs were originally bred and trained as “catch” dogs which are dogs that catch large animals such as hogs or wild cattle and can also be used during hunts. Pit Bulls have also known under the following names: American Pit Bull Terrier, Pitbull, Pit Terrier, Bull-and-Terriers, Half and Half, Bull Baiter Dogs, Yankee Terrier, Rebel Terrier New Yorkies, St. Francis Terriers and Staffordshire Fighting Dog.
Why Pit Bulls Attack
The aggressive history associated with these dogs comes from its history of misuse. In the early 1800’s, Pit Bulls were used in a practice called “bull-baiting” where they were forced to fight bulls and bears. That practice was eventually banned and pitting dog vs dog replaced bull-baiting. In 1835’s, dog fighting finally fell out of public favor in the United States and was banned. Despite this, pit bulls are still sometimes bred for their aggressiveness to be used for illegal dog fighting. Without knowing an individual dog’s blood line, there is no way to know if a particular pit bull was improperly bred. Some dogs may attack simply because they have been bred to be aggressive dogs or have vicious tendencies.
In addition to the above, Pit Bulls may attack if they believe they are protecting their owner or home, they feel threatened or if they simply are improperly trained. Like any breed of dog, pit bulls can become overly-aggressive simply because the owner does not understand how to properly handle or train the dog. When the owner is aware of a vicious or aggressive tendency, he or she has a duty to prevent the dog from access to the public and to warn people of the dangerous nature of the dog. Chaining dogs or allowing them to take a dominant role can further encourage aggressive behavior.
Pit Bull Attacks
Pit Bull attacks are often highly publicized because of the extensive damages these powerful dogs can do. In 2011, out of 31 fatal dog attacks, pit bulls accounted for 71% of those fatal dog attacks. This number is even more stunning when you realize that pit bulls only account for about 5% of the United States dog population. Obviously, they have caused a disproportionate number of deaths. It is not uncommon to hear the victim was the owner or a relative who was familiar to the dog. Needless to say, attacks by pit bulls can cause permanent physical and mental scars and even death.
