British Petroleum Refinery Toxic Chemical
Release in Texas City
April 6, 2010
According to news reports, 538,000 pounds of toxic chemicals escaped from the BP refinery in Texas City over a 40 day period starting on April 6, 2010. Benzene (a known carcinogen), nitrogen oxides (known to cause respiratory issues) and carbon monoxide were released into the air after BP decided to continue gasoline production while they underwent repairs to a key piece of equipment. This event occurred less than 4.5 months after BP was hit by a Federal Jury with a $100 million dollar verdict awarded to 10 workers who suffered from a similar chemical exposure in 2007.
