Bicycle and Pedestrian Fatalities in Harris County
Per a report from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration showing recent fatality crash data in the United States, a notable increase in pedestrian fatalities has been reported year over year, including those from bicycle wrecks. Authorities say that bicycle or scooter fatalities in the Houston area peaked in 2016 at nearly 200, up from just 110 in 2010. Though the rate of these serious incidents has plateaued overall in the past decade, cyclist deaths hit a record high again last year. In fact, almost 50 cyclists died in Houston in 2020 alone, more than double the number reported the previous year.
Furthermore, many of these fatal bicycle accidents were hit-and-run collisions, where the driver involved flees the scene, leaving victims and their families vulnerable. It’s clear that cycling in busy city centers across Texas, including Houston and the greater Harris County region, can be risky.
Unfortunately, bicycle accident victims in Texas may suffer from long-term physical issues, costly medical bills, job loss, and sometimes, even death. But the victims and their families who are affected by a serious Texas accident can and should contact an injury lawyer in Houston for guidance.
