Houston, TX (April 12, 2021) – A 5-year-old boy died and his father was hospitalized after a major crash occurred on Sunday involving an intoxicated driver who tried to flee on the Southwest Freeway, authorities said.
First responders arrived at the scene around 3:30 a.m. Officers say that a BMW was traveling northbound on the Southwest Freeway feeder road when it collided with a Nissan that was driving on Fountain View Drive. The impact of the crash caused the Nissan, which was occupied by a man and his 5-year-old son, to roll over. The boy was restrained in a child safety seat in the back, police said.
Both the father and the child were transported to a hospital via ambulance, though the 5-year-old was later pronounced dead. The father’s condition wasn’t immediately known, but officers on the scene say that he is expected to survive.
The driver of the BMW appeared to be intoxicated and attempted to flee on foot after the crash. He was stopped by witnesses, according to authorities. Charges are pending against the driver.
Officers are continuing to investigate the accident and have not released further details.

Whether it’s long-term physical issues, costly medical bills and job loss, or even death, the victims of fatal car accidents caused by drunk drivers and their families are left vulnerable. But those affected by a serious Texas car accident can and should contact an injury lawyer in Houston for guidance. In some cases, a skilled car accident attorney in Texas can help victims get justice, as well as a full and fair settlement from a personal injury lawsuit or a wrongful death lawsuit.
