Houston, TX (September 28, 2021) – A teenage truck driver ran over six cyclists on Saturday, September 25, sending four of them to the hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.
According to police, the cyclists were riding along Old Highway 290 in Houston when a black diesel pickup truck slowed down and then accelerated in front of them, intentionally blowing exhaust on the cyclists.
Officers with the Houston Police Department reported that two of the cyclists were transported and treated at a local hospital in Waller County. EMS airlifted two others to a Houston hospital to be treated for head injuries. Two other cyclists sustained injuries but reportedly refused treatment.
One of the victims said the cycling group was about 75 miles into their ride when the incident occurred.
The driver, identified as a 16-year-old male, was allegedly attempting to harass the cyclists. It’s unclear if he suffered injuries in the collision.
The teen driver was not arrested as of Saturday, per information from officials. The Waller County Sheriff’s Office has not released further information at this time.
Serious Bicycle Accidents in Houston
Per reports from officials in Houston and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s recent fatality crash data, a notable increase in pedestrian fatalities has been reported year over year, including those from bicycle wrecks. In fact, bicycle fatalities in the Houston area peaked in 2016 at nearly 200, up from just 110 in 2010.
Though the rate of these serious incidents has plateaued overall in the past decade, cyclist deaths hit a record high again last year. Nearly 50 cyclists died in Houston in 2020 alone, more than double the number reported the previous year. It’s clear that cycling in busy city centers across Texas, including Houston and the greater Harris County region, can be risky.
Sadly, many of these fatal bicycle accidents were hit-and-run collisions, where the driver involved flees the scene, leaving victims and their families vulnerable. Even worse, bicycle accident victims in Texas may suffer from long-term physical issues, costly medical bills, job loss, and sometimes, even death.
But the victims and their families who are affected by a serious Texas accident can and should contact an injury lawyer in Houston for guidance.
