Houston, TX (May 31, 2021) – A speeding driver collided with multiple cars on a busy Houston freeway Saturday night, May 29, engulfing one of the vehicles in flames and leaving at least two people dead.
Authorities said that the wreck happened on eastbound Interstate 10 near Normandy Street overnight. A police officer spotted a Dodge Challenger Hellcat traveling at least 100 miles per hour and tried to catch up to them. By the time the officer reached the driver, they had collided with at least two other cars. One of the vehicles caught fire with three people inside, two of whom died in the crash. Four other victims sustained serious injuries, including severe burns, and were transported to area medical centers.
HPD Assistant Chief Heather Morris said that alcohol, as well as speed, was a suspected factor in the collision. The driver of the Dodge Challenger was being questioned by police on Sunday morning, but no charges have been filed. All eastbound lanes of the freeway were closed through Sunday morning as investigators worked to clear the scene and piece together the events leading up to the wreck.
We would like to offer our deepest condolences to the families of the deceased victims at this time. Our thoughts are with the injured victims and their loved ones in hopes of their full recovery.
