Houston, TX – Wrong-Way Crash on SW Fwy at W Bellfort St Kills Two, Injures Others

Houston, TX (September 13, 2021) – A fiery crash occurred on Sunday morning, September 12, killing two people and forcing the complete closure of the Southwest Freeway.

Officers with the Houston Police Department say the incident happened just before 5:00 a.m. near West Bellfort Street. A vehicle heading north in the southbound lanes of the freeway clipped an oncoming 18-wheeler, according to Houston officers.

The 18-wheeler lost control as a result of the incident, veered off the freeway, and plunged over a barrier wall, falling onto the feeder road below. Two other cars were also involved.

Someone in one of those vehicles tried to rescue the wrong-way driver from their vehicle but wasn’t successful, police said. Both the big rig and the wrong-way vehicle burst into flames after the accident.

Authorities halted traffic on the freeway and feeder road for more than eight hours. The driver of the tractor-trailer, as well as the wrong-way driver, died at the scene. Paramedics transported the other victims to area medical centers, though their current conditions are unknown.

The HPD is continuing its investigation and is working to piece together the events leading up to the deadly wreck. No further details have been released.
