Dog Attacks & Bite Injuries in Texas
Per reports released by the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA), nearly 50% of Texas households are home to at least one dog, placing the Lone Star State in the top 10 nationally for dog ownership. However, there’s a downside to dog ownership, as Texas also led the nation in dog-bite fatalities in the eight-year period between 2005 and 2013. Furthermore, Texas ranked second on the list for dog-related fatalities nationwide in 2016.
Though the vast majority of dog bite injuries aren’t fatal, hospitalizations and even deaths are a common reality of life around dogs in this state. In fact, dogs can be dangerous to those living around them or in their neighborhoods, particularly young children. Oftentimes, kids are bitten or mauled over adults and suffer serious injuries because of their smaller size, vulnerability, and their higher likelihood of panicking. Nearly 45% of those killed in these dog attacks are under the age of 10.
In the case that victims of attacks in Texas survive, they may suffer from long-term physical issues, costly medical bills, and lost wages or job loss. When victims succumb to their injuries, grieving families are left to pick up the pieces and negotiate with insurance companies protecting the dog’s owner or companies who care for wayward canines. But the victims and their families who are affected by a serious Texas dog attack can and should contact an injury lawyer in Houston for guidance. In some cases, a skilled attorney in Texas can help victims get justice and a full and fair settlement from a personal injury or wrongful death lawsuit.
It’s imperative that you talk to a dedicated lawyer who covers dog attacks in the Houston area. An attorney can review all of the facts surrounding your case to determine if you have the right to pursue compensation for the injuries and losses you sustained. They will tailor their advice to match your specific needs.
Whether you’ve been involved in a minor dog attack or sustained serious injuries from mauling and bites, it’s important that you contact a lawyer as soon as possible. Insurance companies are not on your side, especially those protecting their policyholders after an attack caused by their negligence. Don’t let insurance adjusters twist your own words to use against you.
