Meet Houston Missions: Adult & Teen Challenge of Texas (Addiction Counselling)

On Meet Houston Missions and The Simmons and Fletcher Local Missions Podcast, your host, Paul Cannon, talks with Carlos Piñero, the Program Manager of Adult & Teen Challenge of Texas’ Houston Men’s Recovery Center. Adult and Teen Challenge was founded in 1958 when the organization’s founder, Pastor David Wilkerson, began ministering to drug addicts and gang members on the streets of New York and recognized a need for recovery centers. A recovery home was formed shortly thereafter. Later, Adult & Teen Challenge began to expand into multiple states, and its Houston Men’s Center was established in 2006. The mission has locations across the United States and proudly serves Houston and the surrounding areas. The Adult & Teen Challenge of Texas’s Houston Men’s Recovery Center provides residential, faith-based programs for men to overcome addiction, transform their lives, and rehabilitate into society while maintaining their sobriety. The mission aims to provide effective solutions for individuals struggling with life-controlling drug and alcohol issues and connect them with individual and biblical counseling, spiritual support, and relapse prevention to help them rebuild their lives. Currently, Adult & Teen Challenge of Texas offers six men’s campuses across Texas.

Adult & Teen Challenge of Texas Services

For people trying to end their addiction to drugs or alcohol, it may be difficult to know what the first steps are and how to maintain their sobriety. Many people quitting addiction suffer from mental health struggles, depression, and other withdrawal symptoms that may lead to a relapse if they don’t have a strong support system around them. When men, women, or teens make the decision to end their addiction and need support, Adult & Teen Challenge of Texas is there to provide a system for getting sober and rehabilitating back into society. One of the services Adult & Teen Challenge of Texas offers is a Christ-centered residential addiction recovery program. The organization offers several men’s and women’s campuses across Texas where those seeking to end their addiction can stay. This program offers participants a place to stay while they receive group and individual biblical counseling, parenting classes, spiritual support, relapse prevention assistance, anger management classes, drug and alcohol education courses, and social/recreational activities with others seeking recovery. This recovery process takes participants 12 to 18 months to complete and ensures they have a safe, structured, and supportive environment to break free from addiction. The mission aims not only to end addiction but also to offer participants a chance to start over, become a new person, build a relationship with God, and maintain lifelong sobriety.

Another service that Adult & Teen Challenge of Texas offers is aftercare support following completion of the residential program. Many people leaving the recovery program may find it difficult to re-enter society or may be fearful that they will relapse once they return home. Adult & Teen Challenge of Texas offers ongoing support systems for these people, ensuring they always have help. The mission provides employment support for those who are ready to re-enter society and begin working. Additionally, they provide a re-entry program that allows graduates to remain on campus and continue learning and growing until they feel comfortable returning to society. Adult & Teen Challenge of Texas also offers an internship program with hands-on training for graduates who want to give back by pursuing ministry with the organization. Lastly, the mission offers lifeline support groups in a nonresidential setting. These groups offer graduates post-recovery courses to restore individual and family relationships that were affected by addiction.

Sponsorship Opportunities

As a non-profit organization, Adult & Teen Challenge of Texas does not receive state funding and relies heavily on sponsors and donors. There are multiple ways that those looking to sponsor the mission can participate. One way you can sponsor the mission is by sponsoring a student either monthly for $35 or yearly for $420. This sponsorship provides the student with all the materials they may need to successfully complete the program and live a life of sobriety. Another way you can sponsor Adult & Teen Challenge of Texas is by sponsoring the yearly Come Alive Gala. The Gala is a night of fun, raffles, auctions, and fellowship, with all the proceeds going to help end addiction.

Volunteer Opportunities

Although they are a nationwide organization, Adult & Teen Challenge of Texas relies on volunteers to help those looking to escape addiction and reintegrate into society. As a faith-based organization helping people work through addiction, this would be a good opportunity for church groups to volunteer and help mentor those going through the recovery program. As a volunteer, you may be able to help provide assistance and guidance to people in the recovery program, help train new staff members, help put together events, and help gather donations for the organization.

Other Ways to Help

If you want to help Adult & Teen Challenge of Texas but cannot volunteer, there are other ways to help. One way you can help is by attending the organization’s fundraisers and gala. In May, the organization is hosting a Come Alive Gala to support addiction recovery. The location and time of the event can be found on the official Come Alive Gala website.

Another way you can help is through the Angelic Resale Shop. The Angelic Resale Shop accepts clothing, furniture, household goods, electronics, and appliance donations and resells them at a discounted price. 100% of the net proceeds from sales are used to provide Christ-centered addiction recovery services.

Additionally, if you are unable to visit The Angelic Resale Shop, you can visit the organization’s website and donate to the cause. Click on the menu option at the top of the page, click on Donate, and enter the amount you would like to donate.
