Pasadena, TX (August 31, 2021) – Rescue units with the Houston Fire Department (HFD) and Pasadena Fire Department (PFD) responded to a massive apartment complex blaze on Tuesday morning, August 31.
Crews were dispatched to Shaver Street and Allen-Genoa Shaver for a heavy fire around 5:00 a.m. Responders continued fighting the flames at the three-alarm fire nearly an hour and a half later.
The Pasadena fire marshal said a woman and her husband were pulled from the scene. The woman was airlifted to a nearby hospital in critical condition. Her husband sustained burns over 30% of his body and was taken to the hospital by ambulance.
Authorities suspected that the fire began on the first floor and spread into the attic, impacting nearly 20 units.
Officers with the Houston Police Department, together with Pasadena PD, are still investigating the incident. They have not released further details about the incident or the victims’ current conditions. No citations or charges are pending at this time.
Apartment Fires in Texas
Across the country, fire-related accidents leave thousands of people dead and cause billions of dollars in damage annually. Unfortunately, Texas claims one of the top spots for residential fires in the United States. In fact, Texas fire departments responded to more than 70,000 fires in just one year.
This means a fire occurred every seven minutes, many of them in residences or large residential buildings. Plus, the figure was more than 5,000 for the city of Houston, as reported by the Houston Fire Department.
Tragically, a total of almost 200 civilians lost their lives in fire accidents in Texas. Officials added that more than 800 civilians sustained injuries statewide, while 40 were reported in Houston alone.
Though they may not occur as often as vehicle collisions, these blazes are an unfortunately common reality of life in the Lone Star State. Furthermore, victims of apartment fires in Texas may suffer from long-term physical issues, costly medical bills, job loss, and sometimes, even death.
When victims die, families are left to pick up the pieces. Sadly, families may be forced to negotiate with property insurers that protect landlords and owners over victims.
