Richmond, TX (July 9, 2021) – Deputies with the Fort Bend County Sheriff’s Office said that they are investigating a car accident that killed two people and a toddler in Richmond on Friday morning, July 9.
Officers said they received a call around 1:15 a.m. Dispatchers reported that the crash involved two vehicles and happened on the Westpark Tollway near FM 1464.
According to investigators, a white Audi SUV was fully engulfed in flames by the time firefighters arrived. Rescue units said the Audi fire was spreading to the second car, a dark-colored sedan that deputies described as the wrong-way vehicle. The 28-year-old man driving the sedan and the Audi driver, identified only as an adult woman, were pronounced dead before they could be transported to an area medical center.
Police said that the 2-year-old nephew of the wrong-way driver was in the car but was not in a car seat. The toddler was given CPR before he was flown via Life Flight to Texas Medical Center. Deputies said the child later died at the hospital.
Deputies said that they are still piecing together the events leading up to the collision, and toxicology reports are pending. Officials obtained a short video of the wrong-way driver’s sedan driving eastbound in the westbound lanes of the toll road, and they are attempting to figure out where the man was going and where he entered the toll road.
Wrong-way detectors are not installed on the Fort Bend County side of the Westpark Tollway but are installed on the Harris County side. Authorities say they are considering adding the road technology to the Westpark Tollway in Ford Bend County.
The investigation is ongoing, and further details have not been released.
