As a board-certified personal injury trial lawyer based out of Houston, it is not uncommon for me to get hired by injury victims who live in the surrounding smaller cities like Anahuac and Mont Belview. Over my 30 years of practice, I have handled a variety of cases in this same courthouse, ranging from car accidents to gas explosions. Our law firm has handled personal injury cases in Chamber County and surrounding areas since 1979. If you are pursuing a personal injury case in Chambers County, here is some information that may help you.
Chambers County
Chambers County sits about 55 miles east of Downtown Houston and spans from a few miles north of I-10 down to the ocean, with west and east borders running from near the outside edge of Baytown to Winnie. It is easily accessible from Houston by heading east on I-10. Both District Courts are physically located in Anahuac. However, they are not at the same location. To get to Anahuac, take I-10 east to Wallisville (Exit 810), then head south on FM 563 until you reach Anahuac. There are two District Courts in Chambers County—the 253rd District Court and the 334th District Court, and they are not located in the same place, so be sure you know where you are going.
The 253rd District Court of Chambers County
The 253rd District Courthouse is not located in the old courthouse. It is located near the post office at 407 South Main Street, Anahuac, TX 77514. Visiting the 253rd. However, if you are mailing something to the 253rd District Court, DO NOT use the Court’s physical address. The mailing address for the 253rd District Court is 1923 Sam Houston Rm. 223, Liberty, TX 77575.
Before appearing for the first time, you should download a copy of the court’s local rules. A copy of the 253rd District Court Local Rules can be downloaded from the Texas Office of Court Administration Website. You should also note that The Honorable Chap Cain, III, presides over a split court—so he spends part of his time presiding over court in Chambers County and part of his time presiding over Court in Liberty County. So do not just show up to visit, thinking Judge Cain will always be present. The 253rd District Court handles civil and criminal matters.
The 344th District Court of Chambers County
The 344th District Court is located in the old courthouse. The physical address for appearing in court is 404 Washington Ave., 3rd Floor, Anahuac, TX 77514. Like the 253rd, mail is not accepted at the physical address. Mail should be sent to P.O. Box 490, Anahuac, TX 77514.
The Honorable Randy McDonald presides over the 334th District Court and does not use local rules. Rather, the court follows the Texas Rules of Civil Procedure strictly. The 344th District Court handles family law matters.
Lodging, Food, Entertainment
If you find yourself traveling to Chambers for an extended stay, there are not many options near the courthouse for food and lodging. Baytown is the closest area where you are most likely to find a nice hotel or extended stay suite. It is also where you will likely find the best eating options. If you are fortunate to be there during duck and goose hunting season, some of the best duck hunting in Texas is in the southern part of Chambers County. The Oyster Bayou Hunting Club is a personal favorite of mine.
