Today, there are more than 4000 lawsuits pending against manufacturer 3M for adverse side effects from their Bair Hugger normothermia System. Created by Dr. Scott D. Augustine in 1987, the device is designed to prevent patients from becoming hypothermic post-surgery. By filtering air and targeting pressure points, the device is able to force warm air into disposable blankets that cover patients. What is a Bair Hugger Forced Air Warming Blanket?
The Bair Hugger normothermia system was invented to monitor, prevent and treat hypothermia in post-surgical patients. Because they are designed to target pressure points on the patient’s body, the device is able to prevent heat from reaching areas it is not supposed to. The various passages between the Bair Hugger and the patient’s body may increase the risk of infection. Bair Hugger blankets are disposable and not designed to operate in sterile surgical fields.
Bair Hugger Infection Risk
3M has insisted that their Bair Hugger products are safe and efficient. Although there have been claims made by inventor Dr. Augustine that the device increases the risk of infection, 3M says these claims are based on insufficient medical studies and provide the results to more than 100 studies they have conducted on their own. In 2015, 3M attorney Christiana Jacxsens told a medical magazine, “In its entire history, not one hospital, doctor or medical provider has reported a single confirmed incidence of infection believed to be caused by the Bair Hugger device.”
Bair Hugger Lawsuits
The first Bair Hugger trials are anticipated to being by April 30, 2018. The lawsuits are pending in a multidistrict litigation (MDL) in a Minnesota federal court. The first trials selected are referred to as bellwether trials, which serve as an example trial for the other thousands of plaintiffs trying to decide whether to continue litigation or settle out of court.
