Truvada Mass Torts Lawsuit

The Gilead Truvada lawsuits allege that people were harmed as a result of Gilead’s failure to disclose and provide a known safer alternative to the drug they marketed. These drugs include:

  • Atripla,
  • Complera,
  • Stribild,
  • Truvada, and;
  • Viread.

The above drugs use an active ingredient called tenofovir disoproxil fumarate (TDF) to prevent HIV from replicating itself. Included in the known risks of the use of this drug is a condition called lactic acidosis.  This condition is characterized as the body’s inability to remove excess acid. It can result in serious or even fatal kidney and liver damage.  Conditions that may result from the use of this medication include:

  • Acute Kidney Injury
  • Acute Renal Failure
  • Chronic Kidney Disease
  • Fanconi Syndrome
  • Kidney Failure
  • Lactic Acidosis
  • Reduced Kidney Function

Additionally, osteoporosis may develop as a result of the use of this drug. This leaves bones brittle and easily broken.

According to the claims being brought, Gilead knew of a safer alternative active ingredient–tenofovir alafenamide fumarate (TAF). TAF is safer because it requires a lesser dose thereby reducing the risk of harm. However, Gilead discontinued development in the early 2000s citing its similarity to TDF.

In 2015-2016 Gilead won approvals of several drugs using TAF as the active ingredient. These include:

  • Descovy
  • Genvoya
  • Odefsey

In order to promote these, Gilead touted the very information they failed to disclose about the drugs being safer for patients’ kidneys and bones. If you suffered kidney disease and/or bone damage as a result of the use of Truvada or other Gilead drugs containing TDF, you may be entitled to compensation.
