What is Xeljanz and Xeljanz XR?

Xeljanz and Xeljanz XR are drugs that have been approved to treat ulcerative colitis, psoriatic arthritis, and rheumatoid arthritis when other types of treatment have not been effective. It was approved first for rheumatoid arthritis in 2012, followed by psoriatic arthritis in 2017 and ulcerative colitis in 2018.

FDA Alerts Xeljanz Users of Increased Risks

Xeljanz labelOn February 4th, 2021, the FDA issued a public alert that the preliminary results of a required safety trial suggested an increased risk of cancer and serious heart issues with the use of Xeljanz and Xeljanz XR.  The FDA has not yet released the results of their investigation as to whether there may also be an increased risk of blood clots forming in the lungs and death.

Has Xeljanz Been Recalled?

No. As of 4/26/2021, Xeljanz has not been recalled. The FDA has not released the final results of the clinical safety trials at this time. According to the FDA, patients should not stop taking the drug but should discuss options with their healthcare provider. Healthcare providers are urged to weigh the risks and benefits in determining whether use should be continued.

Is There a Warning on Xeljanz?

In July of 2019, a warning label was added by Pfizer warning patients over 50 who use 10 mg twice daily that there was an increased risk of sudden cardiovascular-related death.
