What is Zostavax?

Zostavax is a vaccine used to prevent shingles in adults over the age of 50. It is not meant for children and works by boosting the body’s immunity against the shingle virus herpes zoster. Zostavax was the only approved shingles vaccine in America until October 2017.  Zostavax is a single-dose injection. It uses a weakened form of the herpes zoster virus to trigger the immune system to respond. When it works properly, the vaccine works on about 50 percent of patients and only lasts about six years.
