Why is Roundup Being Sued?
Roundup contains a chemical (among others) called Glyphosate. The Environmental Protection Agency has determined that Glyphosate alone is a probable human carcinogen—something that causes cancer. Glyphosate is a chemical made by Monsanto. Glyphosate was originally created with the intention of it being a water softener. After determining it was not suitable for that use, Monsanto developed Glyphosate as a non-selective pesticide—that is, they destroy a wide variety of good and bad plants.
Studies of Farm-Workers exposed to large amounts of Roundup in Canada, Sweden, and the United States have demonstrated a higher occurrence of non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma than those not exposed to Roundup. The World Health Organization, using the research of 17 different scientists around the globe, concluded that Glyphosate is a probable human carcinogen.
Studies to date have shown a connection between Glyphosate and the following serious medical conditions:
How Does Glyphosate Get into Your System?
There are two ways Glyphosate can get into your system. First, it can get in through inhalation of the chemical during production or use. Second, it can get into your system from contact with the skin.
Defective Marketing Claims
Monsanto, the makers of Roundup have been sued by both the State of New York and the Government of France for false advertisement claims in conjunction with representations that Roundup is safe and targets enzymes in plants that are not found in people or pets.
Currently, over 1100 lawsuits have been filed against Monsanto alleging injury. Some of these cases are consolidated in a multi-district litigation pending in San Francisco, California. The claims range includes false advertising, misrepresentation, unjust enrichment, defective product claims, and exemplary damages.
