Who Is Stryker?

Stryker Corporation is a medical technology company that produces a variety of products, including reconstructive, medical, surgical, and neuro-technology and spine products, including several problematic and recalled hip resurfacing systems and implants. What is Metallosis?

Metallosis, or metal poisoning, occurs when the body absorbs a high enough level of metal fragments or particles to cause a reaction. Metal poisoning can involve chromium poisoning, cobalt poisoning, or toxicity from many other metals. Metallosis from certain metal-on-metal hip replacement implants manufactured by companies such as Stryker has been reported.

Recalled Metal Prosthetic Hip Implants

In 2012, Stryker issued a voluntary recall of its Rejuvenate and ABG II modular-neck stems. The company initiated the recall as a result of potential risks associated with modular-neck stems. Notably, these possible risks include “the potential for fretting and/or corrosion at or about the modular-neck junction, which may result in adverse local tissue reaction, as well as possible pain and/or swelling, in or around your hip.”

For patients who have received a Rejuvenate or ABG II modular-neck hip stem implant, the company advises these individuals to contact their surgeon immediately to schedule a follow-up. The company recommends that surgeons consider “performing a clinical examination, such as blood work and cross-section imaging on all patients who received a Rejuvenate or ABG II modular-neck hip stem regardless of whether a patient is experiencing pain and/or swelling.”

Stryker Hip Surgery Lawsuits and the Settlement Program

In response to the voluntary recall and associated medical risks, hundreds of individuals who have received a Rejuvenate or ABG II modular-neck hip stem have filed product liability lawsuits against Stryker. Notably, these Stryker hip replacement lawsuits assert that Stryker failed to properly design its medical devices and failed to properly warn the public regarding the risks associated with these medical devices. Numerous plaintiffs are seeking and receiving monetary damages for their pain and suffering, medical, expenses, and loss of wages.
