Honda’s Recall Woes Continue to Plague the Automaker

Honda’s Recent Recalls

In 2022, Honda recalled millions of vehicles for various safety issues ranging from dashboard issues to faulty fuel pumps. Since then, Honda has been faced with additional recalls and probes that could lead to millions more vehicles being recalled. Now they could be looking at another major recall if the NHTSA’s investigation does not go their way. the NHTSA began looking into approximately 1.7 million Hondas over phantom brake issues in 2022 and the investigation is ongoing. Drivers reported that the autonomous emergency braking system would engage when it was not supposed to. The NHTSA has received 2,876 consumer complaints, and reports of 93 injury incidents and 47 crashes potentially related to this issue in Honda vehicles. Since the 2022 investigation began, the NHTSA has expanded its investigation of this issue to include the Honda CR-V models made from 2020-2022.  This expanded investigation could potentially expand the number of vehicles under scrutiny to 3 million vehicles.  This is over and above the millions of vehicles they have already had to recall. Below is a summary of the recalls they have struggled with recently.

In February of 2024, 750,144 Hondas were recalled due to airbag sensor issues that could allow the airbag to deploy with a child in the front seat causing injury to the child.

124,000 Hondas Recalled in 2023 For Brake Failure Issue

Honda issued a voluntary recall for another 124,000 vehicles in the fall of 2023 due to a manufacturing defect in the tie rod fastening the brake master cylinder to the brake booster allowing the two to come disconnected. This can result in loss of braking ability in part or entirely according to Honda’s report. The recalled models included:

  • Honda Civic (2020–2021)
  • Passport (2021–2023)
  • Pilot (2021–2022)
  • Ridgeline (2020–2023)
  • Acura MDX (2020)

Honda Issued Five Separate Recalls Affecting Millions of Vehicles Worldwide in 2022

Japanese automaker Honda has issued several recalls to address 1.6 million potential defects in Odysseys, Pilots, and Passports sold in the United States. The recalls affect Honda model years 2018 through 2021 and cover a variety of vehicle defects. These recalls come on the heels of a previous recall of 1.4 Million Hondas worldwide for fuel pump issues. That previous recall affected a variety of 2018 through 2019 vehicles including their Acura, Accords Civic, Fit, Insight, and HR-V auto lines. A brief overview of the problems that caused the recall are listed below as the affected vehicle years, makes, and models.

Approximately 500,000 Honda Odysseys and Honda Passports manufactured from 2019 and 2020 as well as Honda Pilots manufactured from 2019 through the 2021 year are affected by a recall. Apparently, the software programming has a bug that can cause the rearview camera displays to stop working. Obviously, this is a serious safety hazard

Recall: Dashboard Display Failure

A recall was issued for 608,000 Honda Odysseys manufactured between 2018 and 2020 due to faulty software that can cause dashboard functions such as the speedometer, engine oil light, and the automobile’s gear position to not display. This recall also affects the Honda Passport, year models 2019 and 2020 as well as Honda Pilot, year models 2019, 2020 and 2021.

Recall: Sliding Door Outer Handle Cables Prevent the Sliding Door from Latching Securely

This recall affects over 324,000 2018, 2019, and 2020 Honda Odysseys. Dealers will replace the sliding door outer handle cables starting on September 23, 2020. It was discovered that water can penetrate the cables and during a freeze, the cables can prevent the sliding door from securely latching.

Recall: Rearview Camera Mounting Holes

Another recall issued by Honda affects another 212,000 Honda Odysseys year models 2019 and 2020. It was discovered that water can penetrate the rearview camera mounting holes and either cause the camera to produce a distorted image or fail to display an image altogether. In a statement from Honda, they have announced that they will replace the rearview camera starting on September 23, 2020.

Recall: Faulty Fuel Pump

The faulty fuel pump recall affects years 2018 through 2019 Acuras, Accords, Civis, Fits, Insights, and HR-Vs.  Approximately 136,000 of the 1.4 million vehicles recalled for faulty fuel pumps were sold in America. Apparently, the fuel pumps have a manufacturing defect that can cause the pump to suddenly stop working and cause the engine to stall.  It reportedly may happen at any speed potentially leaving drivers to deal with trying to maneuver off the road safely.

What to Do if Your Honda is Recalled
