Amber Sharp, Executive Director of The Haven tells Paul Cannon about their mission to help female child survivors of human trafficking, sexual exploitation, and institutionalized sexual abuse recover in this episode of Meet Houston Missions and The Simmons and Fletcher Local Missions Podcast. The goal of The Haven is to empower survivors to restore their self-identity and sense of self-worth. Originally known as The Home of Hope, The Haven is a Christ-centered project that has been in the making since the early 2000s. It currently houses four girls for 9-12 months at a time. It has helped 24 girls since September of 2020.
Girls are referred by individuals and institutions recognizing the need for help.
Power Through Restoration
The Haven does not just provide food and shelter, residents of The Haven receive group therapy, individualized therapy, and equine therapy. They are provided access to medical care, education, and spiritual health counseling as well. In addition to this, they are prepared to transition back into the outside world in a safe place. The Haven requires 15 full-time employees to care for the girls on a 24-7 basis. Adding additional staffing could give them the ability to house 6-8 girls.
