Meet Houston Missions: Cypress Assistance Ministries
In 1990, local churches and members of the Cypress community were struggling to meet the needs in the area. Cypress Assistance Ministries (CAM) was created as an outreach program of a local church, feeding hungry people from the backseat of a car. CAM was quickly granted 501(c)3 status and became a stand-alone nonprofit organization, serving northwest Harris County.
Cypress Assistance Ministries is a mission that serves people in crisis by providing:
- financial assistance primarily toward rent and utilities
- food for individuals and families
- special delivery of food and toiletries for elderly and disabled people with a lack of mobility
- one-on-one job counseling along with job leads through the Operation Jobs program
- multiple levels of year-round ESL classes
- GED classes on a year-round basis
CAM also hosts seasonal programs at times of need during the year such as the start of school, Easter, Thanksgiving, and Christmas.
Who CAM Benefits
CAM benefits anyone who is struggling financially. Unexpected events such as illness, job loss, divorce, or natural disasters such as a hurricane, or more recently, a pandemic, can take a family from being self-sustaining to simply having no way to recover without a helping hand. That’s when CAM steps in.
CAM’s Retail Store: Angel’s Attic
Angels’ Attic is Cypress Assistance Ministries’ resale store, offering a place for CAM’s clients to shop with vouchers, in addition to providing a place where the community can shop for items they otherwise might not be able to afford. Proceeds from the resale store go directly to fund the ministry. Our goal is to turn stumbling blocks into stepping stones by making resources available to individuals and families facing adversity, helping individuals move forward on the road to self-sufficiency.
Location
CAM’s main office and Angel’s Attic are now located at 12930 Cypress N Houston, Cypress, TX 77429. They can be found on the web at https://www.cypressassistance.org.
Donor and Volunteer Information
On a regular basis, CAM needs financial donations, food donations (both nonperishable and fresh items), and donations for Angels’ Attic. For Angels’ Attic, we appreciate donations of housewares, home décor, clothing, electronics, toys, furniture, jewelry, and more in new or gently-used condition. Seasonal donations needed include backpacks and school supplies at back-to-school time and toys at Christmas.
Cypress Assistance Ministries relies on volunteers to operate. There are many roles and they work to find the best role for the individual. Volunteers are needed in the Food Pantry, the Donation Center, Angels’ Attic, in administrative roles, as Client Services counselors, and as receptionists. To volunteer please contact volunteer@cypressassistance.org.
